LEAG—Bernard Ray Hawke Next Lunar Generation Career Development Award
The executive committee of the Lunar Exploration Analysis Group (
LEAG) has announced the naming of the Bernard Ray Hawke Next Lunar Generation Career Development Award in honor and memory of one of America's most renowned lunar scientists who passed in January 2015 (see the 2015
news item from the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, University of Hawaii).
LEAG, a community-based, interdisciplinary forum, was established in 2004 to assist NASA by providing analysis of scientific, technical, commercial, and operational issues in support of the scientific exploration of the Moon. The newly-named award, sponsored by
SSERVI (NASA's Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute), honors Dr. Hawke's legacy of scientific achievement, exploration advocacy, and mentorship by providing travel funds to early career scientists and engineers to participate in LEAG meetings. Selection of awardees is based on the importance and relevance of an applicant's first-author research abstract submitted in response to meeting goals and themes.
