Several scientists have argued that small grains of magnetite and sulfide can be formed by a variety of non-biological processes, which McKay and his colleagues readily admit. In fact, tiny grains of magnetite and iron sulfide occur along with organic compounds in carbonaceous chondrites. These grains were produced by nonbiological processes.
